The warehouse of beleaguered online retailer Asos was torched in a deliberate attack, according to police, damaging thousands of pounds worth of stock and forcing the company to halt orders over the weekend.
Baffled customers took to social networking sites to demand order updates from Asos, which saw £1.2bn wiped off its value earlier this month after a shock profits warning, and which said it had “pressed pause” on it website in the wake of the arson attack.
It is not the first time that Asos has been hit by fire. In December 2005, Asos halted operations at its former Hemel Hempstead warehouse after explosions at the nearby Buncefield oil depot.
On Sunday, Nick Bubb, a retail analyst, said: “The worst case scenario is that customer confidence is affected for a longer period of time and that the suspicion of arson delays the insurance companies’ response.
“Although the City will be sympathetic about Asos’s misfortune, unless the company can issue a reassuring update in the morning, the short-sellers will target it.”
