Qinetiq wins £33m MOD training contract

Defence and technology company QinetiQ has secured a five-year, £33m deal with the Ministry of Defence to allow soldiers and airmen to practise working together in simulators before being deployed abroad.

The renewed contract will allow air force pilots and army commanders to train in a virtual battlefield – even though they might be thousands of miles apart.

The system links aircraft simulators, ground forces control tents, and even individual troops so they can train on working in combined operations.

The contract is a coup for the FTSE 250 defence technology specialist as the system was introduced to train troops before they were sent to Afghanistan and was expected to be wound down as British forces were withdrawn.

“Simulation and synthetic training is an extremely important part of training our modern Armed Forces and… the ability to practise and train in highly realistic but safe environments is a vital, life-saving capability,” said an MoD spokesman.

QinetiQ has drawn on experts from the military, academia and even computer gaming to make the system as realistic as possible.

Miles Adcock, managing director for QinetiQ Training, said: “Our training provides the RAF and Army with a realistic representation of the operating environment they will face.”
