Pippa Malmgren, group founder of international risk advice group DRPM, said that seeking independence is becoming a worldwide phenomenon, from separatist movements in Venice to Catalonia.
She said that independence movements are a function of people realising that the financial structure of the nation they live in is not serving their interests.
Ms Malmgren asked how Scotland would make a living from the oil reserves in the North Sea if any oil belongs not to Scotland but to oil companies.
If nothing else, Ms Malmgren added that the bid for independence was "forcing people to think about economics and governance, that can't be a bad thing."
