Target expanded the scope of its recent data breach, disclosing on Friday that up to 70 million customers had been affected.

The disclosure, made as part of an ongoing investigation by the company, added significantly to the number of customers affected by a breach during the holiday season.

In mid-December, Target said that hackers stole customer names, credit or debit card numbers, expiration dates and three-digit security codes for 40 million customers who had shopped in its stores from Nov. 27 to Dec. 15. On Friday, the retailer said that its investigation had determined that additional information — including names, mailing addresses, phone numbers or email addresses — had been taken during the breach, affecting up to 70 million people.

“I know that it is frustrating for our guests to learn that this information was taken, and we are truly sorry they are having to endure this,” Gregg Steinhafel, the Target chief executive, said in a statement. “I also want our guests to know that understanding and sharing the facts related to this incident is important to me and the entire Target team.”
