“We have a shortlist of new non-exec directors that can … give us the best of themselves. Sadly, this has not been the case in the last year,” he said.
Thomas Shull, Jeremy Asher and John Bell, who all fell on their non-exec swords over the past month, are no doubt glad to have been of service.

The jury is still out on whether there is something nasty in the woodshed at Quindell. But retail investors, at least, are giving the controversial insurance outfit the benefit of the doubt.
A poll of the 958 – and counting – members of the newly formed Quindell Shareholder Action Group shows that 61pc have a “positive” attitude towards their investment.
Some 14pc side with the bears, and a quarter are neutral.
Together, the activist investors own almost 7pc of the company, so the results of their weekly sentiment survey should make interesting reading for the Quindell board.
“We are definitely a supportive group,” says its founder, who wishes to remain anonymous. “But that doesn’t mean we can’t ask challenging questions.”

Mike Coupe has found it hard to fill Justin King’s rather large shoes since taking over the top job at Sainsbury’s.
But not in the way you might think.
Making a grand entrance on his first day in the supermarket’s Holborn HQ last Monday, Mr Coupe did a double-take when he found Robbie Feather, the grocer’s new head of online, ensconced in his usual seat.
It must have been an early start.
Mr Coupe had, as befits his CEO status, been moved to a more executive desk – over in the spot vacated by Justin King.
It’s tough at the top.
