She told the Daily Mail: “I think the advent of the waterproof pen, which costs about 20p at the checkout of all school uniform shops, was the problem. It is like a magic wand.”

The woven name tags have been made by Cash’s since the 1870s and by 1964 the firm was appointed ‘Manufacturers of Woven Name Tapes to Her Majesty the Queen.’

Nametapes are produced in several styles of handwriting and in different colours, but this attention to detail makes them labour intensive and also means parents have to spend time at home sewing them into clothes.

Will Wright, a partner at KPMG, said: “I really hope that this is not the end of the road for the business.”

Cash’s was set up by two Quaker brothers, John and Joseph Cash, in 1846 and became England’s leading silk ribbon manufacturer.
