Job advert salaries fall by £2,000

Although salaries being offered by employers have fallen, jobseekers could still negotiate higher pay.

The slump was widespread, with every region except Wales seeing a decline in advertised pay. The East of England was hardest hit, with an 8.4pc drop. Wales recorded a 4.1pc rise.

A few industries bucked the trend, with advertised pay in catering and hospitality rising 6.6pc to £19,234.

Separate research found that takings in restaurants over Christmas jumped 38pc on the previous year.

Other sectors that recorded salary increases in December included engineering, up 5.1pc, and energy, oil and gas, which rose 1.5pc. Both sectors are suffering skills shortages.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, the sectors that have suffered most severely from the salary slump include healthcare, down 3.4pc, and teaching, 1.8pc lower, as austerity measures take their toll on public sector spending.
