'Schindler's List' estate to lead housing revolution

Tony Pidgley, chairman and founder of leading housebuilder, Berkeley Homes, (pictured below with the Chancellor George Osborne), said it was vital that developers do not repeat old mistakes when building estates.

"In the past, housing booms have often created dreary places. This time, it must be different. This toolkit provides a blueprint for regeneration and all the new development Britain needs to beat the housing crisis," he said.

Dark alleyways, unattractive buildings and a lack of green space are traits of Britain's depressed, post-war council estates. Woodberry Down, althought half-built, is well-lit with views over a reservoir, a community centre and shopping facilities.

Mr Pidgley called for the Government to stop landbanking and release more space so the construction companies can tackle the UK's housing supply crisis and control spiralling house prices.

The Woodberry Down project has created 470 jobs, 20pc of these for local people, with 35 apprentices on site. It is complicated by a duel carriageway (Seven Sisters Road) dissecting the development, and as a result the road will be narrowed.

The report, launched yesterday, found that 90pc of people already in residence in new homes said they were satisfied with their lives, compared to the national average of 60pc.
