It's as inevitable as death and George Osborne’s taxes that someone will use Budget Day to bury bad news.
This year’s winner is – surprise, surprise – the Co-op, which dug a large hole for the news that its “co-operative relations director”, Mark Craig, has left after 30 years as part of a major reshuffle of the executive board.
Meanwhile, Michael O’Leary, the Ryanair boss who once humbly compared himself to Jesus, staged a popularity contest with the Chancellor at lunchtime yesterday by holding a press conference to unveil Stansted Airport’s exciting growth plans.
Alas, a Ryanair source told Diary that RSVPs came in “dribs and drabs”.
