City Diary: MPs tell Barclays' tax haven to get out of Africa

Energy giant SSE has come up with an unusual euphemism to sugar the news that around 500 staff will lose their jobs.

The Big Six supplier announced in its markets update yesterday that the payroll cuts will be achieved through a programme of “voluntary early release”.

No doubt the SSE staff facing the chop – sorry, “early release” – will be comforted by this medical-sounding analogy.

The cult of youth in Silicon Valley, the brutally ageist tech bubble where “dropped out of college” is considered a solid CV, has become farcical.

Looking young is now so closely equated with being smart, reports New Republic magazine, that older (i.e. over 30) tech workers are increasingly turning to Botox and other cosmetic fixes to secure angel investors’ dollars.

Happily, there is a backlash to this dormroom mentality. As one ‘veteran’ at a New York start-up said: “We have a ping pong table here. A few of us want to burn it.”
