City Diary: Nat Rothschild's too posh not to crash Porsche

Mick Davis, the South African former chief of Xstrata, was last heard of seeking $3bn (£1.8bn) to buy mines for his new commodities venture, X2 Resources.

Perhaps Liam Fox MP, the former defence secretary, can put in a good word with his globetrotting business contacts, who include – serendipitously – the South African magnate Michael Lewis.

One good turn deserves another, after all.

The latest register of members’ financial interests reveals that, only last week, miner Mick dug deep to support Fox’s political cause to the tune of £7,000.

Was Ryanair founder Michael O’Leary jetlagged when he served “evening drinks” at the unusually early hour of 4pm at the airline’s presentation yesterday?

Or did he simply want to get journalists so drunk that their memories of the new “Ryanair Experience” were, at best, hazy?

Either way, it was a bold move to host the event within staggering distance of an east London stretch of the River Thames.
