Gnip helps Twitter handle the inconceivably large amounts of data that the company deals with daily. The company has direct access to the full stream of tweets flowing through Twitter, known as the 'Firehose', and is therefore a crucial data reseller.
Acquiring Gnip will allow Twitter to make its data more accessible. Messerschmidt says that Gnip is essential for “collecting and digesting” Twitter’s public data, and “delivering the most essential Tweets to partners”.
It will also allow Gnip to act as a mediator between Twitter and external companies that wish to access Twitter’s database.
"Combining forces with Twitter allows us to go much faster and much deeper. We’ll be able to support a broader set of use cases across a diverse set of users including brands, universities, agencies, and developers big and small," said Chris Moody, chief executive of Gnip, in a blog post.
"Joining Twitter also provides us access to resources and infrastructure to scale to the next level and offer new products and solutions."
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
