"The good news is that the prognosis from my doctors is excellent, the cancer was caught quickly, and my condition is curable," the 58-year-old wrote in a leter to employees and shareholders on Tuesday.
"Importantly, there is no evidence of cancer elsewhere in my body," he said, adding that he expects to start treatment soon at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York, an 8-week process.
The cancer was discovered after Mr Dimon, who was not feeling well about two weeks ago, went to see doctors, according to a report.
Despite being credited with ensuring JP Morgan came through the financial crisis relatively unscathed, his reputation has been battered in recent years by the "London Whale" scandal in which the bank lost $6bn (£3.5bn) from risky derivatives trades.
Last year the bank paid US regulators $13bn to settle charges related to the sale of toxic mortgages in the run-up to the financial crisis and reported the first quarterly loss under Mr Dimon after legal fees of $9bn due to "escalating demands and penalties from multiple government agencies".
However, Mr Dimon remains popular among investors. After the 2012 "London Whale" trades there was shareholder pressure for him to drop the role of chairman, but investors pullled those demand after they were warned Mr Dimon might quit the bank.
Shares in JPMorgan slipped 0.6pc in after-market trading.
