Sundip Meghani tweeted: "Everything Everywhere, but not Everyone. Disgraceful that EE doesn't treat everyone fairly."

Matt Woosie said he would "definitely leave EE" at the end of his contract because of the charge.

John Masters tweeted: "EE, disgusting that you're charging for priority on query calls. Everyone should be treated equally."

Commenting on Priority Answer, which is available to customers on SIM-only contracts, an EE spokesman said: “EE’s goal is to set the highest standard for customer service in the telecoms sector. To support that ambition we’re investing significantly in our retail stores, contact centres and account management websites and apps.

"We've already committed to returning over 1,000 roles to the UK from overseas call centres, and have already opened two new UK centres.

"To contribute to this and other investments in service we have introduced some small charges for certain customer services.”

Although EE's customer service line is open from 8am until 10pm, the new Priority Answer service is only available between 9am and 6pm.

EE also said that it does not employ separate operators for Priority Answer.

It comes after Ofcom found that EE was the most complained about mobile phone company in the UK.

The telecoms watchdog revealed that at 0.12 complaines per 1,000 customers, EE’s pay-monthly mobile complaints volumes were twice the industry average, and largely driven by issues related to complaints handling, billing and issues with changing provider.
