Announcing the order ahead of the gathering of NATO leaders which starts on Thursday, Prime Minister David Cameron said: “I’m delighted that on the eve of the NATO summit, we can announce the biggest single contract for armoured fighting vehicles for the British Army since the 1980s.

The Scout is a small tank and is armed with a 40mm cannon. The basic design can be adapted for a variety of roles including ambulance, command and control, recovery and repair tasks.

The jobs the order will secure include 300 at General Dynamics’ factory in Oakdale, South Wales, with the others spread across the supply chain in Britain.

General staff chief Peter Wall, the Army’s most senior officer, said the order would refresh the army’s armoured capability.

“It provides advanced intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance capabilities and will be the ‘eyes and ears’ of commanders on the battlefields of the future,” he added.

“With digital links to all of our other systems it will be able to fulfil a wide range of combat roles.”
