The stand-out performer was the company’s Premier Inn division where like-for-like sales rose 9.2pc over the 11 weeks. In the 24 weeks to August 14, revenue per available room, a key metric in the hotel industry, rose 8.7pc. Total occupancy was 83.6pc, 3.7 percentage points higher than in the same period last year, and a total number of room nights sold rose by 10.4pc to 7.7m.
The Costa part of the business grew total worldwide sales by 15.3pc to £602.4m over the 24 weeks, and franchise sales were 14.2pc higher at £236.7m. The company added that it plans to open 300 new stores and 600 of its Costa Express outlets in the full year.
The company’s restaurant arm, which includes the Brewers Fayre and Beefeater brands, grew sales by 1.7pc.
Andy Harrison, chief executive, said: “We have delivered another strong quarter’s trading, thanks to the hard work of all the Whitbread teams. This maintains our excellent growth record.
“Whitbread remains on track for another good year. Our strong brands continue to win market share, reinforced by ambitious organic network expansion.
“We plan to open around 4,500 new Premier Inn rooms and five joint site restaurants along with around 300 net new Costa stores this year. Our committed pipeline has grown to around 13,000 UK rooms.”
