GlaxoSmithKline to bag RBS chairman Sir Philip Hampton

Posted by Unknown on Wednesday, September 24, 2014

GSK has been searching for a successor to Sir Christopher Gent, who has chaired its board over the past decade, for several months.

If confirmed, Sir Philip, who has chaired RBS since 2009, will be joining the drug giant at a challenging time. GSK is embroiled in a major bribery scandal in China, where it has been accused of paying as much as £300m in bribes to doctors and officials to win sales. It also faces allegations of bribery in several other countries, including Poland, Jordan and Lebanon.

The company's woes deepened last month when it was forced to issue a profits warning due to currency headwinds and intensifying competition for its historic best-seller, Advair.

GSK and RBS declined to comment.
