Activision's Destiny is on track to become the most successful video game in history, with $500m (approximately £310) worth of pre-orders made on the first day of its release.
According Cowen & Co. analyst Doug Creutz, it is the most pre-ordered game in history that is not a sequel.
A strong start is crucial for Destiny. For most games of the first-person shooter genre, almost 40pc of sales for the first year are generated within first five days of release.
Last year’s Grand Theft Auto V generated $800m (approximately £49m) worldwide for Take-Two Interactive Software Inc. on its first day last September, making it the biggest video game debut.
With Microsoft in talks to buy Minecraft creator Mojang and Facebook's $2bn (approximately £1.2bn) virtual reality Oculus acquisition earlier this year, Bloomberg discuss the huge money-making potential from video games.
