Finance Police in southern Italy apprehended a vehicle on Tuesday which was carrying a load of fake 50 euro notes totalling 17 million euros (£13 million).
Police were investigating a tip-off of suspicious activity at a shopping mall car park in Marcianise, in the Campania region, when they noticed a man frenetically moving boxes from a shipping service vehicle into his own small van.
According to a police statement, they followed the van and pulled it over.
In the back of the vehicle they found several boxes containing the bank notes, which were covered with office supplies.
Italian Finance Police released video footage of the episode on Wednesday which showed the van being stopped and the boxes of money being found.
The man driving the car was arrested and held on a charge of "falsifying bank notes and introducing fake currency into the country".
