If Scotland gained independence, 96% of annual oil output, and 47% of gas would go to Scotland, but with oil production down by 40%, future revenues may struggle to cover an independent Scotland's promised social spending.
Scotland's financial sector is also significant, employing 100,000 people and managing more than a trillion dollars (£615 billion) in funds and generating more than $10 billion (£6 billion) a year for the Scottish economy.
Companies such as RBS, and Standard Life have warned they will move south of the border if Scotland votes for independence in Thursday's historic referendum.
