"My original motive was simply to accomplish something unique. However, since that time, I have discovered many joys in the traveling, the photography and the puzzle-like challenge of my mission," he states on his website.

But while he’s enjoyed the experience, he prefers to visit independent outlets in his downtime. "I respect Starbucks for its business sense, customer service and amenities including clean bathrooms and WiFi," he told The Telegraph. "But unless I am checking a new store off my list, I would not go there for the coffee."

When the 42-year-old started his mission in 1997, there were just 1,400 stores. The chain now has more than 17,000 outlets across the globe.

"When I came up with the idea, the barista told me he thought there were about 1,500 stores, and only in the US, Canada, the United Kingdom and Japan. The number seemed manageable. If I had known how big it would become, I might not have decided that the goal was to visit every Starbucks in the world."

His favourite store is on Duddell Street, in Hong Kong.

But he told The Telegraph he’ll stick with his mission.

"As you can imagine, Starbucks is not going anywhere. I can see myself visiting new stores as an old man. The only major refinements I've made to the rules is to specify company-owned (in whole or in part, excluding licensed and franchised stores), and that I only need to drink a sample of coffee, at minimum."
