G4S could face investigation over Guantanamo contract

Security firm G4S could face a government investigation over its acceptance of a £70m contract to provide “janitorial services” at Guantanamo Bay, the US naval base which houses terrorism suspects.

Human rights charity Reprieve has filed a 17-page complaint with the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills alleging that the British firm’s employees “may contribute to the ongoing human rights violations” at the base’s notorious prison camp.

G4S stands accused of breaching voluntary guidelines introduced by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development which state that British businesses must be responsible wherever they operate.

A G4S spokesman said that the company would not have any responsibility for the detention centre at the naval base. “Any party can make a complaint to the OECD. Submitting a complaint does not mean it has any validity,” he added.

There are 149 inmates being held without charge at Guantanamo Bay.
