“I’m really excited about what the future holds for ClubstoHire, given the speed at which the business has grown over the past four years,” said Mr McGinley, who studied International Business at San Diego.

He has agreed to extend his role as a brand ambassador for the business until 2021.

The company opened its maiden outlet in Portugal’s Faro airport and now operates from 21 sites, including locations in Spain, Cyprus and Ireland.

Tony Judge, chief executive, said the golfer will help the group expand further.

“We’re absolutely thrilled that Paul has increased his investment in the company,” he said.

“His international profile and business acumen will be of even more help to us as we look to grow in new markets like Dubai and the Far East.”

Still, while ClubstoHire is eyeing further growth, other companies in the golf market are struggling, hit by the sport’s declining popularity in the US.

Adidas, the German sporting goods giant, in July disclosed that it was restructuring its TaylorMade club-making division, where sales tumbled 18pc in the second-quarter.

American firm Callaway Golf, another equipment maker, has also been hurt by weakening demand, as has Dick’s Sporting Goods.
